A 75th anniversary symbol is diamonds. We just celebrated the diamond anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge. Another “jewel” in San Francisco is the Stern Grove Festival, marking its 75thanniversary with the kick off of this year’s summer concerts series. And everyone is welcome to enjoy a variety of performing arts in a beautiful outdoor amphitheater located at 19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard.
As in the previous 74 years, admission to any and all performances is free.If you own a pair of Levi Strauss jeans, you have a connection to Sigmund Stern Grove. Sigmund was one of four brothers who inherited the jeans business from their bachelor uncle Levi Strauss. Sigmund’s wife, Rosalie, bought the grove property in 1931 for $50,000. In 1932, the first official concert was performed by the San Francisco Symphony. The goal has remained to showcase the performing arts – music and dance – as a gift to the community. We cannot be sure that Rosalie could imagine all of the music that would be played over the years. Jazz was added in the 1966 performance series with Turk Murphy and Vince Guaraldi. In 1969, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band performed.
In a nod to the 1960s and 1970s, singer Sharon Jones, lead singer of Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, performs “soul and funk” music.  This clip is from the opening day concert in 2011, with her singing James Brown’s “This Is a Man’s World” –
The Stern Grove Festival is a registered charity and they appreciate support for their productions. They offer memberships that come with perks, such as parking privileges.  For the Sunday concert dates, a list of performers, and membership info, check out –
Best wishes,
