A Loss for the San Francisco Sound

Living means inevitable loss. Recently, we had to face the loss of rock legend David Bowie. Then came the sad news about the death of Glenn Frey of the Eagles. And most recently, on January 28, 2016, we lost Paul Kantner, who created the “San Francisco sound” with the Jefferson Airplane.

Here is a retrospective of Kantner’s work:

Kantner was credited with the line, “San Francisco is 49 square miles, surrounded by reality.” He loved San Francisco. He could be seen regularly at his seat outside Caffe Trieste in North Beach, enjoying an espresso.

Here is a collage of images from the 1960s, set to one of Kantner’s famous songs written with band mate Marty Balin.
The song was released in 1969.

Paul, thank you for the music.
