Fifty-one years ago, on June 24, 1966, the Beach Boys came to the Cow Palace in San Francisco to perform at “KFRC Presents The Beach Boys Summer Spectacular.” The concert included the Lovin’ Spoonful, Chad & Jeremy, Percy Sledge, The Byrds, and the Jefferson Airplane. The Beach Boys were the star attraction.

The band consisted of Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine. Here they are playing “California Girls” on a variety show. See if you can name the two “dudes” who drop by for a chat:

Brian Wilson was the songwriter and musical genius. He wrote many more songs than the surfer-theme songs we all remember. A self-taught musician, he could hear the melodies in his head. That became a problem when he could not control the sounds he heard. This June, a movie about Wilson’s life  opens in theaters.

Here is an explanation about the movie, including Wilson visiting the actors on the set:

Dennis Wilson died in 1983 at the age of 39 from drowning off the Los Angeles coast after a day of drinking. Carl Wilson died in 1998 the age of 52 of lung cancer. Mike Love turned 74 years old in March, and Al Jardine will be 73 years old in September. Brian Wilson just turned 73 years old a few days ago. Here is Wilson’s Web site.
