Falling leaves may signal a change of season in New England. San Franciscans have the annual Chinese Autumn Moon Festival to remind us that it is time to celebrate the coming harvest. This year’s festival is planned for September 10 and 11 on Grant Avenue, between California Street and Columbus Avenue, in the heart of Chinatown. There will be a parade and traditional dancing along with a “Chinatown’s Got Talent” showcase of new teen performers.

For this celebration, Chinese bakeries have been making a special treat called “moon cakes.” These small round cakes are made with lotus seed paste and often imprinted with Chinese calligraphy characters meaning longevity or harmony.
To introduce children to this Asian holiday that has been called a “Chinese Thanksgiving,” check out Amy Tan’s children’s book called The Moon Lady. The beautifully illustrated book tells the story of a special goddess “…who grants wishes to those who ask.”
