Gung Hay Fat Choy

Gung Hay Fat Choy! It is the new Lunar Year 4710, the Year of the Dragon, one of the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

There are many Chinese traditions, customs and foods that were a part of a San Francisco native’s experience growing up in The City. On Lunar New Year’s Day, families celebrate at home. Public celebrations are planned in San Francisco’s Chinatown, including the world famous Chinese New Year Parade scheduled this year for Saturday, February 11. Here are some photos on the official Chinese Parade Web site: www.chineseparade.com/

If you cannot participate in the celebrations here, you can enjoy a fanciful Hollywood version of San Francisco’s Chinatown by renting the movie
“Flower Drum Song.” www.imdb.com/title/tt0054885/

The movie came out in 1961 and was nominated for five Academy Awards in 1962. One of the 11 songs in the musical is, “Grant Avenue,” where the lyrics include, “…On the most exciting thoroughfare I know. We call it Grant Avenue, San Francisco, California, U.S.A.”

Here is Nancy Kwan singing “Grant Avenue” and dancing in a scene from the movie:
