It is June and the beginning of summer. Here is a look at a San Francisco institution.
There is sad news from Linda and Brian Mitchell. They reported the passing of their father, Larry Mitchell, co-founder of Mitchell’s Ice Cream. He left us on May 12 at age 88.
Larry, with his older brother Jack, opened the store on June 6, 1953. Larry continued to be a part of the day-to-day operations until he retired at age 86. His son says, “He was a modest, hard-working, San Francisco native who was well-liked and admired by many who knew him. He was a mentor to many of our employees and provided hundreds of jobs to young people in and around the Mission District.”
The store is still operating at 688 San Jose Avenue, San Francisco, CA. Stop by for some unusual flavors, such as banana or ginger or mango or many more.
To celebrate the beginning of summer, here are the Beach Boys reminding us the 1960s included being surf-crazy, starting with “Surfing USA.”
Happy summer 2016,
