On August 13, 1965, The Matrix night club opened at 3138 Fillmore Street in San Francisco. The house band was the Jefferson Airplane.

Martyn Jerel Buchwald attended Washington High School. He changed his name to Marty Balin when he recorded a couple of singles in 1962. Here is what he sounded like before forming his famous band.

In 1965, he opened The Matrix in the Marina with his dad and three investors. The Jefferson Airplane used the Matrix almost exclusively in the beginning. They were able to rehearse during the week without having to tear down their equipment constantly.

Here is what we are used to seeing when the Jefferson Airplane performed.

Marty Balin left the Airplane in 1971. The Matrix became a hangout for local musicians. It continued to present local and visiting bands. The club closed in 1972.
