Welcome to the 48th anniversary of the Summer of Love!

Dr. Timothy Leary, of “turn on, tune in and drop out” fame, called for a “gathering of the tribes” at the Human Be-In on January 14, 1967. By June of 1967, it is estimated that 100,000 people answered the call to come to San Francisco. And that is without the help of social media.

Here is what most people thought San Franciscans were doing that summer:

The truth is that many people were not dancing in Golden Gate Park. There was a mix of people, even in the Haight. Here is a 1967 clip of people walking along Haight Street. You will see shoppers, guys with crew-cuts, and perhaps some tourists with the people who just wanted to express their individuality.

San Francisco in the 1960s lives on. People want to experience what they imagine was here then. And here is the Magic Bus to take them on a trip:

Peace and love,

Carol
