On January 22, we can celebrate the 50th anniversary of the show, Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In. It ran on NBC on Monday nights at 8 pm Eastern Time.

Here is the “cocktail party,” a standard sketch for the comedy show, with the band Three Dog Night as guests singing their hit ,“Joy to the World.”

And on September 16, 1968, presidential candidate Richard Nixon was a guest. He taped,  “Sock it to me?” Nixon was not doused with water or dropped through the trap door like actor guests sometimes were.

The invitation was also offered to Nixon’s opponent, Vice President Hubert Humphrey, to be a guest on the show, but he declined. Nixon used to boast that Laugh-In got him elected. George Schlatter, the creator of Laugh-In, said, “I believe that.”
